Legal Consequences and Needs
CRSV results in harm and disputes which for many survivors means that they need access to legal and other forms of justice and legal aid. Victims of CRSV and their children may, however, be unable to claim legal ‘victimhood’ identities and receive little opportunity to access justice and reparation.
In addition to the possibility to access (different forms of) justice, victims may need legal aid to deal with issues related to loss of land and inheritance, including threats and intimidation over inheritance disputes (in some cases and countries, the family of the (late) husband will claim the right to inherit the land). Another issue could be legal aid with regard to accessing a dead husband’s pension, which others may aim to prevent.
